Scholastic’s Early Childhood Division asked MDesign to create a series of book covers for titles included in their Building Language for Literacy preschool program. While the covers had common elements, type, artwork, and color were left flexible; an important goal was to reflect the content and spirit of each individual title while retaining the feel of a series. We placed the distinctive logo of the program and the Scholastic tag anchored near the bottom of the layouts, and used the same block font for the “Unit Guide” type that appeared on each book; title type was created to mirror the character of the individual book. Colors were selected to be both inviting to preschool audiences and to create a range of hue distinctions; cover artwork was commissioned or chosen for two reasons: the content of each book and the style the art was created in, as it was desireable to expose readers to the widest possible variety. It remains one of Scholastic’s main preschool reading programs.
