MDesign was hired by Discovery Channel to design a multi-part project for their Great Books series. The project contained a self-mailer, a large brochure with matching envelope and letter, and four teaching guides. The Great Books series was a teaching system focused on 8 literature classics; visually, we felt that it would be interesting to form a collage with images that were emblematic of each book. We then undertook an extensive search for appropriate photos and held numerous discussions with the client on audience and usage factors. Once the images were approved, they were formed into collages for each of the collateral formats; elements of the collage were also photographed specially for the pieces. As the self-mailer and the brochure were both intended for informational and ordering purposes, great care was taken to organize the copy into formats that were easily digestable by the end-user. To give the pieces a “classic” feel in tune with the books, a parchment texture was created for the backgrounds. The project generated a marked increase in sales for the series.
