was hired by New Press to develop cover concepts for a new book by
the Exploratorium Teacher Institute. The book itself dealt with different
ways of approaching math and science through activities from various
world cultures. It was directed towards upper-grammar school children
and would be sold in bookstores across the nation. After reviewing
a number of similar titles already on store shelves, we decided that
it was important to create a colorful and inclusively visual cover
that utilized bold, compelling photography; many current titles had
a more institutional, academic look, and we felt that to appeal to
children and their parents in a retail market, this book cover had
to relay the idea that this was not more school-work: the projects
inside were fun and engaging, and ones they would want to do in their
free time. We developed covers along two paths: one would focus on
the children solely, and the other would zero in on the subject matter
and cultural issues; some covers would emphasize both. In all cases,
vivid images were used, and numerous options were presented. |
